This photograph was taken next to the Newport Pier in Newport Beach California. It was the day before my 59th birthday, I had gone to the beach to watch the sunset with some friends. This surfer was catching the shore break and crashing repeatedly, yet would get up, laugh, and wait for the next wave. The joy of watching him, the joy of his freedom in the waves and the joy this photo gives me as he finally nailed it, makes me think this is a perfect image for this contest!
